Periodontal and Implant Microsurgery

The microsurgery training course for the Periodontics Residents at LSU Dental School is the oldest training of its kind in the United States. Though this innovative course, the residents develop the skills to use the operating microscope along with the use of microsurgical instruments and suturing. The primary aim of microsurgery is to minimize tissue trauma while maximizing tissue preservation and reconstruction. This is the only program with instructors trained by the father periodontal microsurgery, Dr. Dennis Shanelec.

About Us

The microsurgery training program at the LSUHSC Periodontics Residency has been a required part of the post-graduate program since 2007. The course was developed and is taught by Drs. Bryan Pearson, Randy Comeaux and J. David Cross, all of whom were trained at MTI by Dr. Dennis Shenelec, the Father of Periodontal Microsurgery. The training for the residents, along with staff coverage in clinic for microsurgical procedures, provides the residents with a foundation for the development of enhanced diagnostic and surgical skills beginning early in their training. Use of the operating microscope, microsurgical instruments and sutures allows the residents to develop and practice precise, minimally invasive periodontal and implant surgical techniques. The post-graduate periodontics clinic has 4 microscopes that the resident's use.
